What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is using another person’s work as your own without citing the original source. In simpler terms, it can be seen as stealing someone else’s work. Plagiarism can include using another’s essay, speech, work of art, video, article, webpage and more.

Some Common Examples of Plagiarism

Famous quote from Malcolm X: “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.”

Quote gone rogue

Going to school is very important for children to learn and adapt to modern society. “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” In this way, education is a way to prepare our children.

  • Here the writer has dropped in a quote without mentioning who it is from, and then moves on!

The incognito paraphrase

Education is like a ticket to what lies ahead because the people who make ready for the future are destined to inherit it.

  • The less obvious form of plagiarism; paraphrasing someone else’s words and not giving credit.

Fallacious facts

Malcolm X states that “Education is our ticket to the past, for yesterday belongs to the people who prepare for it today.”

  • This is properly cited; however, it is misquoted, and the original meaning is lost.

All of the above are examples of plagiarism!
