There are many types of plagiarism, but the severity of plagiarism varies depending on what type it is.

Relatively mild plagiarism

Could have a minor effect on your grade, but still requires attention

Somewhat sloppy in-text citations and works cited/references (spelling names wrong, forgetting punctuation, italics, etc.)
Mistaking citations (eg. wrong page number)

Noteworthy plagiarism

Has a larger effect on your grade and could warrant a re-write

Cited everything properly but didn’t introduce the source correctly or give it context to support your own ideas
Your work too closely resembles the source you use

Problematic plagiarism

Has a larger effect on your grade and your work might be considered un-publishable in workplace situations

Citing a source that does not exist
Citing many sources correctly, but not citing other sources at all
Misinterpreting or citing a source out of context

Serious plagiarism

These can seriously affect your grades and ability to pass a class or can affect your reputation at work

Changing only certain words and phrases but keeping the text largely the same and not citing the original source
Self-plagiarism; Reusing your own complete work and turning in the same essay to more than one class
Stitching together information from several sources and making them sound like your own

Detrimental plagiarism

Types of plagiarism that fall into this category can have a serious effect on your academic record resulting in suspension or being expelled. In the workplace it can have a serious impact on your career and can even result in job loss

Copying someone else’s essay
Asking someone else to write your essay for you or purchasing an essay
Using large portions of text from an outside source
